    Poynt Terminal Setup & Integration

The Poynt smart terminal is GymPoint's payment hardware for in-person card transactions. It supports tap (contactless), chip (EMV), and swipe payments. This guide walks you through setting up your terminal from unboxing to processing your first payment.

    Unboxing and Powering On

    Your Poynt terminal ships with:

    • The Poynt terminal device
    • A charging cable and power adapter
    • A quick-start guide

    To get started:

    1. Connect the power adapter to the terminal and plug it into a wall outlet. The terminal can run on battery, but keep it plugged in during initial setup.
    2. Press and hold the power button on the side of the device for 3 seconds. The screen will light up and the Poynt logo will appear.
    3. Wait for the terminal to fully boot. This takes approximately 1-2 minutes on the first startup.

    Connecting to Wi-Fi

The terminal needs an internet connection to process payments.

    1. After boot-up, the terminal prompts you to connect to a network.
    2. Select your Wi-Fi network from the list of available networks.
    3. Enter your Wi-Fi password using the on-screen keyboard.
    4. The terminal will connect and display a confirmation.

    Tips for Wi-Fi setup:

    • Use a stable, dedicated network. Avoid guest networks that require a captive portal (web-based login page), as the terminal cannot navigate those.
    • If your gym uses a firewall, ensure outbound connections to Poynt's servers are allowed (ports 443 and 8443).
    • For the most reliable connection, place the terminal within good range of your Wi-Fi access point.

If Wi-Fi is not available, some Poynt models support Ethernet via a dock accessory.

    Registering the Terminal in GymPoint

Once the terminal is online, register it with your GymPoint account:

    1. Log into GymPoint on your computer and go to Settings > Billing > Payment Processor.
    2. Click + Add Terminal.
    3. GymPoint offers two registration methods:

    Auto-Discovery

GymPoint automatically scans for Poynt terminals on your network.

    1. Click Search for Terminals.
    2. Available terminals appear in a list, identified by serial number and model.
    3. Click the terminal you want to register and click Register.
    4. Give the terminal a friendly name (e.g., "Front Desk Terminal" or "Juice Bar Terminal").
    5. Click Save. The terminal status changes to "Connected."

    Manual Registration

If auto-discovery does not find your terminal:

    1. Click Manual Registration.
    2. On the terminal device, go to Settings > About and note the Serial Number and Terminal ID.
    3. Enter these values in GymPoint.
    4. Click Register. GymPoint links to the terminal using the Poynt cloud service.
    5. Give it a friendly name and click Save.

    Terminal Auto-Discovery Feature

Auto-discovery runs periodically in the background. If you add a new terminal to your network later, GymPoint will detect it and display a notification:

"New Poynt terminal detected. Would you like to register it?"

Click the notification to start the registration process without navigating to settings manually. This is especially useful for multi-terminal setups.

    Processing Your First Payment

With the terminal registered, run a test transaction:

    1. Go to POS (/pos).
    2. Add any product to the cart (or create a test product priced at $0.01).
    3. Click Pay and select Card.
    4. The payment request is sent to your terminal. The terminal screen will display the amount.
    5. Tap, insert, or swipe a card on the terminal.
    6. Wait for the "Approved" message on both the terminal and the GymPoint POS screen.
    7. The transaction appears in your payment history under Billing > Payments (/billing/payments).

If you used a test product, void or refund the transaction afterward from Billing > Payments.

    Terminal Settings in GymPoint

    After registration, configure terminal behavior:

    1. Go to Settings > Billing > Payment Processor and click on your terminal.
    2. Available settings include:
      • Default register — Link the terminal to a specific register if you have multiple.
      • Tip prompt — Enable or disable the tip screen on the terminal during checkout. Most gyms disable this for retail POS but may enable it for services.
      • Signature requirement — Configure whether a signature is required for transactions above a certain amount.
      • Receipt on terminal — Choose whether the terminal prints its own receipt (if a printer is attached) or relies on GymPoint's receipt system.
    3. Click Save.

    Multiple Terminals

If your gym has more than one point of sale (e.g., front desk and juice bar):

    1. Repeat the registration process for each terminal.
    2. Assign each terminal to its respective register under Settings > Billing > Payment Processor.
    3. When staff opens a register, only the paired terminal receives payment requests from that register.

    Keeping Your Terminal Updated

Poynt terminals receive firmware updates automatically over Wi-Fi. Keep the terminal powered on and connected overnight to ensure updates install during off-hours. You can check the current firmware version under the terminal's Settings > About screen.
