Kisi Door Access Setup
Connect Kisi cloud access control to GymPoint: generate an API key, pick your door group, set billing-based access rules, assign fobs, enable member portal unlock, and turn on QR door passes.

GymPoint integrates with Kisi, a cloud access control platform, so your doors enforce membership automatically. Active members get in with a fob, keycard, a QR pass on their phone, or the portal's Open Door button. Frozen, canceled, and overdue memberships are locked out based on rules you control, and every door entry logs a check-in in GymPoint.
Members never see Kisi. They do not need a Kisi account or the Kisi app. Everything member-facing happens in your GymPoint member portal.
Before You Start
You will need:
- Kisi hardware installed at your door. At minimum, a Kisi controller wired to your door lock. Add a Kisi reader if you want members to use fobs or keycards. Hardware comes from Kisi or their resellers, and Kisi's support handles the physical install.
- A Kisi account with your place and doors configured. Your door should already unlock from the Kisi dashboard before you connect GymPoint.
- A Kisi API key. In the Kisi web dashboard, go to My Account > API and click Add API Key. Copy the key, you will paste it into GymPoint once.
- A door access group in Kisi. Create a group in Kisi (for example "Member Door Access") that grants access to the doors members should open. GymPoint places members into this group.
Step 1: Connect Kisi to GymPoint
- In GymPoint, go to Settings > Integrations > Kisi.
- Paste your Kisi API key and click Connect.
- GymPoint validates the key, links your Kisi organization, and registers the event webhook that powers check-ins automatically. No webhook setup is needed on your side.
Step 2: Configure Doors and Access
On the same page, fill in the configuration card:
- Place: choose your Kisi place (your physical location).
- Default door group: the Kisi group members should be placed in.
- Member role: the Kisi role applied to members. Basic is right for almost everyone.
- Click Save.
Use the Test button any time to verify the connection is healthy.
Step 3: Set Your Billing Rules
Door access follows billing. Two settings control how strict it is:
- Grace period: how many days an overdue membership keeps door access before it is cut. Many gyms use 3 days.
- Cut access on: which membership statuses lose access. By default that is frozen, canceled, expired, and overdue past the grace period.
When a member falls into one of those states, GymPoint revokes their door access in real time. When they are back in good standing, access comes back automatically. Nobody has to touch the Kisi dashboard.
Step 4: Access Tiers (Optional)
If different plans should open different doors, map them under Access tiers on the Kisi settings page:
- Each membership plan can point at one or more Kisi door groups.
- Plans without a mapping use the default door group.
- GymPoint keeps Kisi in sync as members buy, change, or cancel plans.
A base plan might open the main entrance while a premium plan also opens a 24-hour annex or recovery room.
Step 5: Assign Fobs and Keycards
Fobs are assigned from the member profile, not the Kisi dashboard:
- Open a member's profile and find the Door Access section.
- Click Manage next to Door Access Fob.
- Enter the fob's ID and save. The fob works at the door within seconds.
Compatible fobs and cards are 13.56 MHz MIFARE (the common Kisi-compatible type). A member's fob only works while their membership keeps door access under your billing rules.
Step 6: Member Portal Unlock (Optional)
Members can also open the door from their phone, with no extra app:
- On the Kisi settings page, turn on Member door unlock.
- Choose which doors members are allowed to open.
- Decide whether to Require member location. When on, the member's phone must be at the gym to unlock, which is the safer default. When off, members skip the browser location prompt entirely, which is the smoother experience if location prompts cause friction.
Members then see a Door Access tile in the member portal. It opens to their door credentials: the Open Door button, and their QR door pass if you enable that too (next step).
Step 7: QR Door Passes (Optional)
If your door has a QR-capable Kisi reader (a Kisi Terminal), members can get in by scanning a personal QR pass from their phone. No app, no printout, nothing for you to hand out:
- On the Kisi settings page, turn on QR door passes.
- Members open the Door Access tile in the member portal and their pass is right there, ready to scan at the reader.
Each pass is personal and follows billing automatically. When a membership is frozen, canceled, or overdue past your grace period, the pass stops working at the door immediately. When the member is back in good standing, a fresh pass appears in their portal on its own. A screenshot of an old pass will not get anyone in.
What You Get Automatically
Once connected, these work with no further setup:
- Check-ins from the door: every member entry logs an attendance check-in, deduplicated so one visit counts once. Door traffic shows up in the same attendance history and stats as kiosk check-ins.
- Denied entry log: when someone is turned away at the door, staff see who, when, which door, and why (for example payment overdue or membership frozen) under Check-Ins, plus an entry on the member's profile timeline.
- Real-time sync: membership changes push to Kisi as they happen, and a nightly sweep double-checks everything.
Troubleshooting
- "Connected, but webhook registration failed": click Connect again. If it persists, use the Test button and check that your API key is still valid in Kisi.
- A fob does nothing at the reader (no light, no beep): the fob is not enrolled yet. Assign it from the member profile first. Readers ignore cards they have never seen.
- A member is denied but should have access: check their membership status against your grace period and cut-access rules, then look at the denied entry log under Check-Ins for the recorded reason.
- The portal says "Door pass inactive": the member's QR pass has been revoked by your billing rules (frozen, canceled, or overdue past grace). It comes back automatically once the membership is in good standing.
- A QR scan blinks red and the door stays shut: that pass has been revoked, usually an old screenshot of a pass that billing rules have since replaced. The member should open their portal for their current pass.
- Rotating your API key: generate a new key in Kisi, then reconnect in GymPoint with the new key. Your configuration is preserved.
